Vienna Theatre Company
At James Madison High School, Norman Chaudet served as the school’s drama director and founded the Vienna Theatre Company in 1974. Many of the students he directed in high school shows wanted to continue working with him after their graduation and his retirement, so “Norm” founded the V.T.C. to fulfil their wishes. In the beginning, Norm’s club was only open to talented young people, but it rapidly grew to include everyone in the neighbourhood. The firm was formally authorized by the municipality of Vienna in 1982 after working with the Vienna Department of Parks and Recreation under Jud Hockman and Barbara Rotterdam for many years. Since then, V.T.C. has grown tremendously, both on stage and behind the scenes, attracting some of the most talented people in the business. The firm was founded in 1985 and has been supported by the city of Vienna ever since. Vienna Theatre Company, a non-profit performing arts organization, has taken up residence in the Vienna Community Center. NextStop Theatre Company
The Elden Street Players, an all-volunteer community theatre group, was formed in Herndon, Virginia, in 1988 as NextStop Theatre Company. It took the Town of Herndon less than a year to identify the exciting possibilities for local arts development, permit and support the construction of a 114-seat black box theatre in an industrial warehouse complex, and assist in finding a home for the fledgling company. As a group, the Elden Street Players (ESP) have always taken risks and pushed themselves to be original. In a little suburb outside of Washington, DC’s established cultural circles, a group devoted to challenging the limits and expectations of Theatre has formed. While other community theatres were seen as “hobby” groups that just regurgitated popular comedies and classic musicals, ESP held itself to a higher level. Aside from staging socially relevant plays, reinventing Shakespearean classics, and commissioning new works, they became famous for squeezing epic and edgy musicals into their small black box theatre. They started to sell-out shows, get high accolades from local theatre reviewers, and win several prizes for all of their plays, no matter what level they were at. ESP has been a well-respected and well-organized community theatre in the Washington Metropolitan region for 25 years. This time around, they chose to test themselves even further in 2013.
