Strasburg Reservoir
The town of Strasburg built a new reservoir in 1923 to supply drinking water to the residents. The reservoir, which held about 25 million gallons of water, was situated on Massanutten Mountain east of town in an area known as “Little Fort Valley.” It was most difficult to connect the mountaintop reservoir to the town’s existing water supply during this project’s inception. A 1700-foot tunnel was dug through Massanutten Mountain to connect the town’s new reservoir with its 1905-vintage predecessor. The construction of this tunnel was a significant engineering undertaking that necessitated substantial funding. Even today, it’s not uncommon to see a town’s entire population celebrating the opening of a tunnel with loud noisemakers like fireworks and sirens. Website
