In 1985, the Washington County Playhouse opened its doors to the public for the first time in its long history. Since that day, it has been functioning in its present position. On Cramer Alley, near Hagerstown’s City Hall, The Playhouse stages live stage shows and serve wonderful food. Washington County Playhouse has always been a small company that is family and privately owned. Five generations of a family have owned and operated a 35-year-old movie theatre. Loretta and Jeff Czerbinski, Kelly Jenkins Moreland and Dixie Odermatt, Don Wiswell and Bruce Levin before the Martins. In 2015, The Playhouse was bought by the Martins. During their time in office, the Arts and Entertainment District and City Center in Hagerstown has seen a revival. Before the Covid-19 closure in 2020, the Playhouse had the greatest crowd and the largest workforce in its history. Even if Covid-19 made it impossible to keep the theatre’s internal employees, The Martins have used the closure to reinvent how The Playhouse will staff in the future.
