Newtowne Players

The Newtowne Players call Three Notch Theatre their home. Former Artistic Director Wendy Hedrich and many founding executive councils founded the Newtowne Players. It wasn’t long before the gang recognized that they needed a permanent place to call their own. When looking for someplace to perform, the group scoured several options. On the square in Leonardtown, Maryland, a former Do-Dah Deli had its first actual production in the basement. It was well appreciated, but the basement could not be used as a permanent residence. They kept looking for other locations, even playing in the streets for “Hot Summer Nights on Fenwick” and putting on a “Mystery Dinner Theatre” for the Knights of Columbus. The Newtowne Players have today accomplished what many believed was impossible. The three Notch Theatre is the name of our place of business. Three notch Theatre was a public library for more than 30 years before becoming a theatre. Newtowne Players, with help from the St. Mary’s County Commissioners and the Redevelopment Authority, took possession of the building in 2005 and began the transformation from the library to community theatre – tearing down walls and floors, erecting the seating area and revolving stage, and setting up space for the lobby, green room, dressing room and box office. As an all-volunteer group, we are pretty proud of the work that has been done. We think that everyone who visits Three Notch Theatre will leave a lasting impression. It’s an actual community theatre because it’s run by, for, and in the neighbourhood. Website
