Bowie Community Theatre
The Belair Town Theatre was created in the middle of the 1960s by a group of theatre enthusiasts who wanted to deliver high-quality entertainment to the growing community of Bowie.A modest Belair Shopping Center was converted into a makeshift practice space, and sound and light boards were moved to and from the locations for each show. The Company immediately gained a cult following in the town by performing in local elementary schools and eventually at the newly completed Bowie High School’s multipurpose room. We were able to get a good deal to perform at the D.A.V. Hall on Rt. 197. We were now putting on a cabaret-style performance. Even yet, the Belair Community Theatre still required a permanent location. After a long period of contemplation, the “Arts Center” was built by the City of Bowie. Mayor Audrey Scott, a former member of the Prince George’s County Council, dedicated the Center on November 19, 1976. Musicomedy Productions of Bowie put up a performance of “Carousel” to open the new venue. The following summer, the Belair Community Theatre presented “Lysistrata.” On February 16, 1967, the Belair Community Theatre became a legally recognized entity. The Bowie Community Theatre was renamed on October 5 to reflect the city of Bowie better. The Theater in the Woods gained a nickname as the Arts Center because of its idyllic location. As a result, the BCT Board of Directors, in cooperation with the other groups using the venue, petitioned the Bowie City Council to rename the theatre “The Bowie Playhouse” after years of answering the question “where do you play in bad weather?” The Bowie Community Theatre, or BCT, has lately extended its repertoire to include more modern and thought-provoking works, which have been acknowledged by the WATCH awards and the British Embassy’s coveted Ruby Griffith awards.
